Microsoft Office 2016 Rollout Starting April 4

office 2016SAIT will begin the rollout of Microsoft Office 2016 on April 4th. The rollout will be staged over the course of a few weeks, with segments of the Division of Student Affairs receiving the upgrade each week. This will help SAIT manage the deployment of the software as well as field questions and help requests for departments in a timely manner.

Email: Departments can expect an email one week prior to their scheduled rollout date with details about the upgrade. We will follow up with two additional reminders as the upgrade date gets closer. Computer users will be asked to log off, but not shut down their computers on the night of the upgrade (all upgrades are scheduled for Monday nights). SAIT staff will be available to assist with questions or concerns regarding the software upgrade during the week following the software deployment.

Web: Pages of information will be added to the SAIT website with instructions for setup. You can find resources on our homepage under the Office 2016 box.

What’s New in Office 2016?

Though Microsoft Office 2016 looks very similar to our current Office 2010 version, here are the most significant changes to expect:

Skype for Business
Skype for Business replaces Lync for instant messaging and video conferencing.  In order to use Skype for Business, you should log into the program using your Office365 credentials ( and your NetID password). More info on setting up Skype for Business

Microsoft Outlook 2016 looks and feels much like Outlook 2010.  In order to use Outlook 2016, you should log into the program using your Office365 credentials ( and your NetID password). More info on setting up Outlook 2016

Microsoft OneDrive
Microsoft OneDrive (which is currently available using Office365) will be available to users via a desktop icon. In order to use the desktop version, you will need to configure OneDrive on your desktop. More info on setting up OneDrive

Microsoft Office 2016 Upgrade – Database Testing

SAIT is making final preparations to upgrade the Division of Student Affairs from Office 2010 to Office 2016.

What is Happening?

In the coming weeks, SAIT will be preparing to upgrade the Microsoft Office suite of products from the current version Office 2010 to Office 2016.  When this upgrade occurs, documents and spreadsheets that were created using the earlier version of Office products will be upgraded to the newest version when opened.

SAIT does not provide support for databases and complex spreadsheets that individual departments have created; however, we want to provide the opportunity for users to test prior to the upgrade.  We do not anticipate any issues with upgrading the databases or complex spreadsheets, as there is no indication of significant changes to the data structure in Microsoft Access or Excel 2016.  However, testing will help identify whether they will work properly in the new version, or if any modifications need to be made so that business operations will not be impacted.

What We Need You to Do:

Student Affairs departments that use Microsoft Access or Excel to manage their business processes should schedule time to thoroughly test their databases and spreadsheets prior to the upgrade. SAIT has already reached out to owners of known Access databases to ensure they have ample time to schedule testing.

A testing environment and workstations will be available in the SAIT Office in Rome Commons. Testing time slots will be available from Tuesday, March 8 – Friday, March 18.  Please contact Keith Blanchard to schedule a time slot to complete the test.  If a time cannot be arranged or if testing is declined, please also inform Keith of that decision.

Keith Blanchard: or 486-4559

Don’t hesitate to contact SAIT Support if you have questions or concerns.  We appreciate your cooperation so that impacts are minimized as we complete this upgrade.  We thank you in advance for working with us on this important endeavor.

SAIT Plans to Increase Support for Tablet Devices

SAIT has been planning multiple initiatives as part of the Division of Student Affairs’ strategic planning process. One of the initiatives we are excited to announce is a project to research and select a product that would allow us to centrally manage mobile device security, patching and tracking. With the implementation of such a product we hope to expand our service catalog to meet the needs of our Student Affairs colleagues, who have expressed the need to be more mobile as they collaborate and meet outside of the standard office space.

Currently, we are only able to support iPads for limited use. This upcoming initiative will allow us to increase the availability and variety of tablet devices in the Division, while implementing the proper infrastructure to manage and support this effort with integrity.

Thank you for your patience while we make the necessary improvements in order to meet this need. We look forward to updating you on our progress and announcing when this service will become available for use.

If you have any questions, please contact SAIT Support.

Updated Process for Print Connections

During the week of December 21, 2015, SAIT will be implementing a change to how printer connections are managed for the Division of Student Affairs. This change is driven by on-going issues in the Division linked to networked printers. SAIT will continue to manage these connections by making print devices available to you based on the computer’s location. Printers that have been manually added will still be available. Please note, after the change has been made you will need to reselect your default printer.

To reselect your default printer, follow the instructions here:

Internet Explorer Homepage Change

During the week of August 10-14, SAIT will be changing the Internet Explorer default homepage for Division of Student Affairs computer users. Currently, the default homepage is the Division of Student Affairs Intranet homepage at “” (no longer a live link). This week it will change to the Division of Student Affairs public website at

This change reflects the need to retire the SharePoint intranet system as well as concentrate communications efforts toward our public website. Employees will find two sections of the public website especially useful – the “News” section (updated bi-weekly) and the “Employee Corner” section which contains useful links and information for Division employees.

Departments that have their own SharePoint intranet sites will not be affected by this change. The second tab in Internet Explorer that opens to department intranets will remain unchanged at this time (this is specific to Dining, SAIT and SHS). The aforementioned departments will see a change to their intranet tab once they have completed the migration from the current SharePoint system to Office 365.

If you have any questions or concerns about the ability to access content or links on the SharePoint Intranet please contact SAIT.
